When you watch a goal back three times from four different angles inside fifteen seconds, or see a slow-motion replay of a 150 mph tennis serve while the next point is already being played, that didn't come out of a camera. It came out of an EVS operator's hands. We are the people sitting two rows back from the director in the OB truck, recording every camera continuously, marking the moments that matter, and firing them back to air the instant the director calls for them — often before the live action has even stopped.
I've been on EVS since February 2009. In that time I've worked over a thousand live events across four continents — Premier League, Champions League, Wimbledon, Roland-Garros, the Dubai World Cup, Royal Ascot, the Grand National, MotoGP, NFL London, SailGP, the Saudi Pro League, and the Paris 2024 Olympics golf. The job title changes depending on who you talk to — EVS operator, replay operator, LSM op, VT operator — but the role is the same: capture the event as it happens and hand the director the right pictures, at the right speed, on cue. This article is what that job actually involves, written by someone who does it for a living.
The EVS operator in three sentences
Here is the whole job, stripped to the bone. An EVS operator continuously records multiple isolated camera feeds (the "ISO" or ingest) into a server loop, marks clips live as the action unfolds, and builds those clips into replays, slow-motion sequences and highlight packages that play to air on the director's call. We are simultaneously recording the show, editing it, and playing it back — all in real time, with no pause button and no second take. Everything else in the role — the kit, the workflow, the jargon — is detail around those three lines.
What EVS actually stands for (and why everyone gets it wrong)
The most common mistake in the industry is treating "EVS" as if it were a piece of equipment. It isn't. EVS is the company — Belgian manufacturer, founded in the 1990s, now the de facto standard for live slow-motion replay in sports broadcasting. The server itself is the XT line: the current flagship is the EVS XT-VIA, and the older workhorses still in service across hundreds of trucks are the XT4A and, before that, the XT3. When an engineer says "the XT is down," they mean the server, not the brand.
The handheld controller every replay operator drives is the LSM — Live Slow Motion. That is the famous black panel with the jog wheel, the T-bar and the row of function keys you'll see in any photo of an OB truck replay seat. It is technically the operator's interface to the Multicam(LSM) software running on the XT server. This is why the role has three overlapping names — "EVS operator" (the company), "XT operator" (the server), and "LSM operator" (the controller) all describe the same person driving the same workflow. A typical shift on a live Premier League
A Premier League outside broadcast is not a one-day job. It starts with rig day, usually the day before kickoff. The truck is built, the EVS island is cabled up to the camera control units, every ISO feed is confirmed into the right server inputs, and we run a full ingest test on every channel. By the end of rig day the loop is recording, timecode is locked across the truck, and every operator has their input map signed off.
Matchday morning is rig check. We arrive early, confirm all feeds are still up after overnight power cycles, verify audio pairs (especially important for clean feed work where the world mix has to be frame-accurate), run a test clip through to the director's monitor, and confirm the highlights workflow is talking to the editor and the playout server. Any gremlin found here is cheap. A gremlin found in the 89th minute is not.
At kickoff the loop is already running. Every camera ISO is recording continuously into the XT-VIA's buffer, and I am watching the referee as much as the ball. The moment something happens — a tackle, a penalty shout, a goal — I mark an in-point, an out-point, and the clip is on the timeline in under a second. The director calls "replay, cam four, slowmo," and I have already built it. That is the standard loop of the job, repeated hundreds of times across ninety minutes.
From a senior replay operator I worked a Champions League final with: "You've got one take to nail a 30-second package. There's no second chance, no render queue, no 'I'll fix it in post.' The director calls, you play, it's on air to two hundred million people."
The peak moments are where the job separates operators. A red card, a penalty, a controversial offside — the director wants the incident, the reaction, and the tactical angle, in that order, within twenty seconds, and they will be calling them in over the talkback while you are still scrubbing the timeline. At full-time the highlights turnaround begins: a two-to-three minute package cut while the presenter is still on air, often with music beds, voiceover inserts and graphics added through the editor, delivered to the director before the credits roll.
The kit you're actually driving
The EVS XT-VIA is the server at the heart of the island. It handles multi-channel ingest and playout simultaneously — recording several cameras in real time while playing back clips to air, all from the same disk array. Older XT4A and XT3 units are still reliable workhorses you will find on second-tier trucks and regional shows; the XT-VIA is the current standard for premium sport because it handles more channels, higher bitrates and IP workflows natively.
The LSM controller is the physical panel in front of you. The jog wheel scrubs frame-by-frame, the T-bar controls playback speed and direction, and the keys trigger marks, clips and playout. After a few years your hands know it without looking — that muscle memory is the difference between marking a clip in half a second and missing it entirely.
IPDirector is the clip management, logging and playlist environment that runs on top of the XT server. This is where you name, tag and organise clips, build playlists for highlights, and ship material to other operators or to the editor. On a big show a logger may sit on IPDirector full-time while the replay operators stay on Multicam(LSM).
Multicam(LSM) is the replay creation tool — the software the LSM controller drives. This is where you actually build the multi-angle replay: select the clip, trim the in and out, pick the cameras, set the speed ramp, and cue it for playout. XFile3 / MediaCeption is the transfer and archive layer for moving clips off the server, backing them up, or sending them to post — less visible during the show, essential for the highlights turnaround and for any content that needs to live on after broadcast.
Where the VT coordinator fits in
On a major broadcast the EVS island is rarely one operator. It is a team working in parallel, and someone has to run the workflow between them, the director, the editor and the graphics operator. That someone is the VT coordinator — a senior role that sits above the individual replay seats and is responsible for what plays to air, when, and in what order. A typical island splits roughly like this:
- Replay operator — live in/out clips and slow-motion play-to-air on the director's call.
- Highlights operator — building and editing packages in real time as the show runs.
- Logger — marking every event in IPDirector so replays and highlights can be found instantly.
- VT coordinator — owns the island's output, talks to the director, sequences the deliverables.

What separates a senior operator from a junior
Junior operators can drive the LSM and mark clips. That is table stakes. The jump to senior is almost entirely judgement and anticipation, not button speed. A senior operator knows the sport deeply enough to read what is about to matter — a manager about to be sent off, a protest building in the pit lane, a break point developing two shots ahead — and has the clip built and cued before the director asks for it. You are paid to be ahead of the talkback, not behind it.
Anticipation is closely tied to calm under pressure. A red card incident in the 93rd minute of a tied derby generates more talkback in ten seconds than the previous hour, and the director will want angle, speed and reaction stacked in a specific order, now. The operators who get rebooked are the ones whose hands stay steady when the talkback gets loud. The third separator is clean-versus-dirty awareness: knowing when the director needs a clean feed (world feed without graphics, for the highlights package) and when they need a dirty feed (with graphics, for the live replay), and supplying the right one without being asked.
From a director I work with regularly: "I don't ask Peter for clips. I ask him for the three I'm going to need next, and they're already on the timeline. That's the difference between a replay op and someone who runs an island."
Common myths about the role
"It's just pressing buttons." The LSM is no more the job than a steering wheel is driving. Buttons are the interface; the work is reading the event, anticipating the director, managing ingest across a dozen feeds and delivering finished packages to air in real time. Nobody hires an operator for button speed — they hire for judgement.
"You only work on football." Football is the volume, but the skillset travels anywhere multi-camera live matters. This year alone my work has spanned horse racing (Royal Ascot, Grand National, Dubai World Cup), tennis (Wimbledon, Roland-Garros), MotoGP, NFL London, SailGP, and Olympic golf at Paris 2024. Different sports, different rhythms, same core discipline of live capture and real-time replay.
"AI is replacing replay operators." Automated clipping and AI-assisted tagging are real and useful — particularly for logging and for surfacing candidates quickly. But the decisions that matter, which angle tells the story, which reaction matters, which moment becomes the headline and which gets cut, are editorial judgements made under time pressure with a director on talkback. AI is a tool that sits alongside the operator; it is not a replacement for the seat.
"Replays are just slow motion." Slow motion is one speed in a toolkit. A replay can be normal speed for a tactical sequence, super slow motion (SSM, typically 3x) for a tackle or a goal, or ultra motion (75x and above, usually from dedicated high-frame-rate cameras) for a contact moment or a ball strike. The operator chooses the speed that tells the story, often mixing them inside the same clip.
